Biological diversity, or biodiversity, refers to the variety of species and ecosystems on Earth and the ecological processes of which they are a part. Biodiversity is all around us and we depend on it for our survival and well-being. It nourishes our most basic needs - the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink - and our spirits – consider the beauty of taking a walk in the forest or listening to a bird sing outside our window. Everyone has a part to play in protecting biodiversity. You can get involved by learning about how important biodiversity is to you, your community, and the world, by getting out into nature to experience biodiversity first-hand, and by taking action, for example, reducing your ecological footprint, creating habitat in your own yard, becoming a ‘citizen scientist’, or contributing to conservation projects.
